Swans falling from the sky, steam trains running down the track

Submitted by Ellen Wallace on November 2, 2006 - 13:21.Community :: Lake Geneva Region :: Geneva, Switzerland :: Morges, VD, Switzerland :: Society :: Travel & Tourism

Icarus was a swan, fallen from the sky The swan hit a tram wire and dropped to the ground, landing in the middle of Geneva's lunch hour traffic.

When in one day a swan drops out of the sky next to you and goes splat! on the ground, and a steam train comes toodling into the Morges station to stoke its fire, you know it's not a normal day. Yesterday was a distinctly odd day, with nothing going according to plan. Here is the story of the swan in French, and my TG blog with photos, in English. The story also appears on page 22 of the print and electronic subscription edition of the Tribune de Geneve.

Steam train in Morges

A steam train pulling into Morges, where most trains are fast intercity and regional ones that run between Geneva and Lausanne: this is a more puzzling story. It was a lovely old train and enchanted even the most jaded looking travellers on the tracks. Cell phones were pulled away from people's ears and messages were cut off mid-phrase while people held up their cell phone cameras to capture the event.

In fact, having seen the steam train and the dropping-from-sky swan, I found it very hard to concentrate on work in Geneva yesterday, so I went train (and tram) spotting. Here is one and you can see the others on Flickr.

I also found a book that suggests we should all resist working too hard. I liked it so much I got lazy and didn't write down the title but I saw it at Off the Shelf, Geneva's English bookstore on the Blvd. Georges Favon. (continue reading)
