Unesco to decide on coteaux de Lavaux as world heritage site

24 Heures, Fre and GenevaLunch - The vine-covered terraced slopes to the east of Lausanne, the "coteaux de Lavaux," are bursting with enthusiasm rather than just the usual grape buds this spring. The region is waiting to hear if Unesco decides to add it to the list of world heritage sites. The decision will be made in New Zealand within a few weeks, but the party is already in the planning stages in Cully, at the centre of the region. A popular event is planned for 22 September and will go ahead no matter what Unesco decides, say the organizers.

Switzerland has six World Heritage sites:

  • Benedictine Convent of St John at Müstair (1983)
  • Convent of St Gall (1983)
  • Old City of Berne (1983)
  • Three Castles, Defensive Wall and Ramparts of the Market-Town of Bellinzone (2000)
  • Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn (2001)
  • Monte San Giorgio (2003)
  • Syrian Arab
