swissinfo - Tourism researchers from around the world, meeting in Switzerland, say that the global tourism industry is resisting problems caused by terrorism, epidemics such a Sars and natural disasters like the 2004 India Ocean tsunami. Travellers are becoming more immune to these travel "shocks." The number of frequent fliers has been growing steadily.
Destinations considered "safe," such as Switzerland, stand to benefit. The market is so competitive that more needs to be done to attract tourists, however, warn some experts. More should be done to take advantage of the number of people brought into Switzerland by low-cost carriers such as EasyJet, Peter Keller, head of tourism for Seco (Swiss secretariat for economic affairs) told the International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism. The group is holding its annual meeting in Pontresino; Keller is its president.
