Michelle Wie charms golf fans in Crans-Montana but misses the cut

Le Matin, Fre - American golf star Michelle Wie pulled in the crowds for the start of the Omega European Masters tournament in Crans-Montana but the course proved too much for her. Weak performances Thursday and Friday mean she missed the cut for the weekend final play.

Wie's enthusiastic fans helped raise the number of spectators by 2,500 Thursday, over the Thursday of the previous year. She ended her round with a bogey, turning in a score of 78, which was 7 over par. Friday she was 8 over par, with a score of 79.

romandie/ats, Fre - Michelle Wie, the 16-year-old American rising star of golf, is expected to be the crowd-puller at the European Masters Tournament in Crans-Montana 7-10 September. In Seoul earlier in 2006 she became the first woman to make it past the cut in a major golf tournament. The Masters in Crans will be her first PGA European men's tournament.

"Doctor" without papers may have treated skier who died

TSR, Fre - A woman who died following a ski accident in December 2005 may have been treated by a fake doctor who accompanied her on Air Glacier's emergency helicopter ride to the hospital.

The skier, a Valaisan who was skiing with former Swiss president Adolf Ogi, went over a small wall and hit her head on a rock. The would-be doctor, as is often the case in ski resorts, worked only during the winter and was paid a daily honorarium. Other doctors found his avoidance of medical discussions and his general behaviour odd; when the owner of Air Glacier discovered this he insisted on seeing the man's medical certificates, but none were produced.
