This is a good week, starting 10 April, to check out local wines, goat cheeses and other produce along the La Cote wine route: dates, places and explanations in English.
The annual Inventions fair 18-22 April, with Cern as the special guest this year.
Arvinis wine fair, 18-23 April in Morges, is Switzerland's largest and one of the best chances around to sample a wide range of wines and talk to winemakers.

Chocolate festival in Versoix, 17 March, 10:00-17:00, place de la Gare. Free entry. Tasting and making, and Favarger opens its factory doors to the public.
216 igloos (Fr) are open to the public Sunday 17 March above Crans-Montana. Boy Scouts are building the igloos and sleeping in them the weekend of 17-18 March as part of the centenary celebrations of the Scouts. Each igloo represents a country and the scouts who build them are sending messages of peace to "their" country.
South Africa is in the cultural limelight: Fribourg Film Festival, 21 March and as a highlight of the Cully Jazz Festival, 27 March. Details for both, in English: Cully festival. See swissinfo, the film festival.

The Cirque de Moscou Phénix, a modern, spectacular acrobatic group but with a long European history, is performing Jubilé! Tuesday night, 20 February, at the Arena near the airport in Geneva. From age 4, 20:30, tickets SFr41-71 from Ticket Corner (no online sales) and Fnac.
Verbier Ride in Verbier 18-19 February promises to be a great snowboarding event and giant party now that there is some snow - 30cm fresh in the resort since the weekend.
WRG's popular comedy night returns 28 February and 1 March, featuring four acts from the Comedy Store in London. Palladium, Geneva. Tickets SFr49.

Snowboard event, not to miss with snow on the way: The week-long Crans-Montana Champs International Open has featured 20 top boarders and and qualifying rounds. The final events this weekend feature 12 riders vying for $50,000 in prize money.
There are still tickets for the Wednesday 7 February evening Art on Ice show at Malley in Lausanne.
The Martin Bodmer Foundation in Cologny, a town next to Geneva, has a new museum designed by extraordinary Swiss architect Mario Botta. Current exhibit, to 1 April, Italian Renaissance, but the permanent collection is remarkable as well. Open Tuesday-Sunday, 2-6, entry SFr15, 10 for children.
"The Spirit of Geneva in a globalized world," 12th annual humanitarian conference, Webster University at the ICC, 15-16 February.
Put it on your calendar now, one of Geneva's biggest annual events: the car show at Palexpo, 8-19 March, with visitors from all over Europe.

Lift07 is a hot and fun international conference in Geneva "about the challenges and opportunities for technology in our society," but it's really about 400 people meeting up and sharing ideas, from geeks to people still grappling with the buttons on their cell phones. Good business conference, good mind-stretching conference and the fondue party one evening is excellent. 7-9 February, ICC, Geneva.
If you're looking for people to do fun things with, GenevaOnline currently has 152 outings posted on its forums. GOL is a popular online community based in Geneva.
"Sleuth" by Simply Theatre, with a professional cast from London's West End, runs from 24 January - 10 February in Geneva. Anthony Shaffer’s comic thriller, in which a crime writer’s murderous games leaves bodies on the carpet, blood stains on the stairs and detectives at the door! Swiss Expo, a popular farm-comes-to-city exhibit of all things bovine, as well as a good place to discover regional products promoted by cantons and communes from around the country. Thursday 11 January to Sunday 14, Palais Beaulieu, Lausanne.
Rugby Munster, the biggest Rugby match ever staged in Switzerland: Current European Cup holders take on local French team Bourgoin at the Stade de Geneva. Sunday, 14 January, 14:00.
35th annual Prix de Lausanne selection of promising young dancers - a week of top-talent promising ballet talent. Monday, 29 January to Sunday 4 February, tickets SFr15-60.

A fine dinner while you cross Lake Geneva: 23 December is your last chance before the CGN closes down for the chilly water season!
Do not sit alone on Christmas Day! GenevaOnline has a group getting together at a restaurant in Geneva for people who think the holiday is not about baked beans in front of the TV by yourself. Plenty of other social activities are being organized over the holidays. December 25, Geneva. Membership in GOL is free, minimum age is 23.
Geneva's official Christmas festivities include organ music at the cathedral and Latino and rap music in the streets, plus plenty to eat and the city's Christmas lights show. Public transport is available until 2:00, after which a night bus is running. Limited parking and the Old Town is closed to traffic starting at 19:00. 24-25 December.
New Year's Light Show and Fireworks on the lakefront in Vevey. Show starts at 22:30, fireworks at 15 minutes past midnight after champagne is handed round.
The Swiss Stained Glass Museum in Romont reopened recently after months of renovation with a special exhibit (to March) of paintings on glass, who want to think about something besides the holidays! Hours, including the holidays

Max Quacks! is a masks and marionnettes Christmas adventure in English by the Egg Family Puppet Theatre, the story of a goose who has no intention of ending up on the Christmas dinner platter. Edouard Vallet exhibit, Pierre Gianadda Museum, Martigny, Vallet's large and intimate portraits of Valaisan farmers and villages at the start of the 19th century are given the kind of exposure they deserve for the centenary of this colleague of Hodler, Valloton and Giacometti. This year's Luminis festival, not to be missed, lights up the chateau and village in Vufflens and part of the Vaud wine route, 14 December and the Chateau Le Rosey and several villages on the wine road 15 December. The itinerant light show, in its third year, is designed by artist Gerry Hofstetter, organized by Romandie Energie and the Swiss Wine Routes Organization. Montreux, the largest and best known in the region, complete with ice rink this year, 24 November-24 December, 11:00-21:00 except Sunday, 11:00-20:00
Morges, the largest covered market, in the old wooden hall next to the train station, 190 artisans mainly from French-speaking Switzerland, 6-10 December, 16:00-22:00 during the week, Saturday 11:00-20:00 and Sunday 11:00-19:00
Nyon, 10 December, 8:00-19:00, Quartier de Rive, smaller and more family-friendly than some of the larger artisanal markets.

The French site genevefamille lists several small towns' markets, with dates and times, for Geneva and Vaud.

The Truman Capote Talk Show starring Bob Kingdom, winner of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival winner. Put on by GLAS, the two-year-old Geneva Literary Aid Society, whose twin goals are supporting the arts and supporting people living with HIV/Aids. Light artistry on Geneva's trees. Take advantage of the unseasonably warm (relatively) evenings to visit Geneva's 15 city centre holiday magic tree sites, decorated by 20 artists. The opening night is Friday 1 December. The web site provides a map.

The museum underwent a major renovation and reopened earlier this year with far more space, a beautiful building with period furniture and permanent collections of miniatures, dolls and toys.
