Swiss drinking less wine

GenevaLunch - Wine consumption fell in Switzerland in 2006, after a slight increase in 2005, to 2.7 million hectolitres. Swiss wine accounted for 1.12m hectolitres, of which slightly more than half was red wine.

Imported wine consumption fell by 1.6% and Swiss wine consumed was down 4%. Stocks of white wine fell by 4.7% while red wine stocks rose 3.2%.

Swiss cheese consumption reaches 20kg

TSR, Fre - Cheese has long been a national favourite food in Switzerland but the country has just broken its record for consumption, now at 20 kilos per person a year. Three-quarters of the cheese comes from Switzerland, with mozzarrella topping the list at 2.35 kg/person, followed by Gruyère at 1.68 kg and raclette, 1.30 kg.

Morges to create wine with oak chips from old train station hall

24 Heures, Fre and GenevaLunch - Morges winemakers have agreed to create a special 2009 red wine made with wood chips from the Halle des CFF. The old oak building, for several years best known as the home to the Arvinis wine fair, will be torn down at the end of 2008 to make way for a new building complex. Arvinis will be held at the Halle this year from 18-23 April.

Wood chips were allowed in wines by the European Union in mid-2006 and Switzerland followed in November. (continue reading)
