Retired couples better off in the Valais than Lausanne

RSR, Fre - Retired people in the German-speaking parts of Switzerland generally have a lower cost of living than those in French-speaking areas and retired people in Valais find life less expensive than in Lausanne. Those are some of the findings published in the most recent issue of Bilan magazine, which compared the cost of living for three types of retired couples in 165 Swiss communes with populations of 2,000 or more. Vaud's Pine Processionary caterpillars threaten pets

WRG-FM - Pet owners in Vaud are being urged to watch their animals carefully, as the usual springtime outbreak of Pine Processionary caterpillar larvae is causing severe problems for some pets. The larvae can cause breathing and vision problems and, if swallowed, can be fatal. The caterpillars nest in trees, so owners near woods are warned to be particularly on the lookout. Notices on most village bulletin boards remind tree owners they are obliged by law to burn the nests. (continue reading)

GenevaLunch and sources - Weather for the weekend is mild, around zero in the mountains at night and up to 12-14 degrees in the Alps during the day. Scattered showers Saturday, with sunny weather returning Sunday during the day.

Spring snow varies from soft to hard mainly depending on altitude but the snow base in many stations is now decent. Some resorts close after this weekend but the large ones remain open until after Easter.

A wall of purple in Duillier

I am suprised there aren't any accidents when folk drive by this wall in Duillier.

It's a traffic stopper.

The purple flowers are in their full glory at the moment clinging to the wall alongside the road that winds up through the village.

I guess they won't be there for much longer, so go see them and enjoy - but best park the car first.

Weekend Swiss winter sports: snow today, then temperatures start to climb

GenevaLunch - Some snow fell in the Swiss Alps this week. In the resorts along the Rhone Valley the peaks have a base of more than 200cm: see the snow depth map from the Swiss Federal Snow and Avalanche Institute. Meteosuisse is predicting some snow today, in Geneva as well as in the Alps. By Saturday temperatures will start to rise, from 5C Saturday to 13C Tuesday in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.
